10 Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar in a glass with apple slices

Apple Cider Vinegar has been a staple in our home for the past few year’s, but in talking with some friends and family, I realized that not a lot of people know how or even why to use it!  So, I’m sharing the 10 benefits and reasons Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) should have a spot in your fridge and in your home!

Now, before we get started, it is super important that you buy the right kind of ACV.  You can buy it at most stores ranging from Wal-Mart to Whole Foods, but it must have these specifications in order to have all of the health benefits.Holding a bottle of Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar in front of grey shirtMake sure it is:

  • Organic
  • Unfiltered or Raw
  • Has the “Mother” – The “Mother” is crucial to the ACV. It is formed as a result of the fermentation process and is what gives the ACV  all of the health benefits.

Make sure the Apple Cider Vinegar contains "the mother" for the health benefits
Now the fun stuff! There are so many benefits and ways to use ACV, but I wanted to give you my top 10.

  • Lowers blood sugar and Aids in Weight Loss
    • Apple Cider Vinegar, when taken before a heavy carb meal, can actually lower blood sugar and insulin responses. This basically means that your body breaks down the sugar at a slower rate, keeping you feeling fuller for longer, and using the carbs for energy instead of storing them for fat.
    • Pour 1 ounces (into a shot glass) and then mix with 8 ounces of water and drink 30 minutes before eating.
  • Perfect Face Toner
    • ACV has a pH similar to the skin, so it is the perfect toner to use after you wash your face at night. It will clear any make up residue, while gently exfoliating your skin and helping your face get ready to be moisturized. In a jar, mix 1 ounce of ACV and 4 ounces of water. For added benefit, or if you don’t like the smell, add essential oils to your jar. I like lavender (when my face is feeling red and needs calming) or tea tree oil (when my face is feeling oily or having blemishes).
  • Great for Heart Health
    • ACV has malic acid. This type of acid can help to clear out your arteries, lymph nodes and organ tissue.
      • Drink 2 teaspoons of ACV with 6-8 ounces of water twice daily.
  • Detox Bath
    • A detox bath can leave your skin and mind feeling so refreshed! By soaking for 30 minutes in a warm tub, you will open up your pores and let go of all of the toxins, impurities and stress that have been building up.
      • Add 1/4 cup each of ACV, Epsom Salt and Baking Soda. Add 6-10 drops of your favorite essential oil and soak for 30 minutes or more.
  • Gives you an Energy Boost
    • ACV contains potassium and enzymes and is a natural energy boost. Just like matching the pH of your skin, Apple Cider Vinegar also matches the pH of your body (neutral is 7). When the pH drops below 7, you are in an acidic state and can experience fatigue. ACV helps to bring your alkalinity up to a more neutral 7, therefore giving you an energy boost!
      • All Natural Energy Drink:
        • Mix 2 teaspoons ACV with 8-12 ounces of water, and add 1 Tablespoon raw honey (local is best).
        • Optional and beneficial add ins: (add 1/4 tsp of desired add in.  You can add all or just one).
          • Ginger
          • Cayenne Pepper
          • Turmeric
          • Cinnamon
  • Laundry Boost
    • ACV can be poured directly into your washing machine. It will help soften clothes, minimize lint and pet hair, clear up chemical build up on your clothes and disinfects.
      • Add 1-2 cups (depending on load size) of ACV to your load of laundry. Pour it over all of the dry clothes before you start the washer.
  • Hair Rinse
    • ACV can help your hair become shinier and full of life. This is thanks to the pH level of ACV. An ACV rinse can help to close the cuticle, making your hair shinier and more vibrant.
      • Mix 1 ounce ACV with 16 ounces of cold water. After shampooing, pour mixture over your head while in the shower. Let it sit on your head for 5 minutes, then rinse.
  • Natural Cleaner
    • ACV has natural antibacterial properties making it the perfect base for an all natural house cleaner. It can clean and disinfect your entire house! Use it on cutting boards, counters and toilets.
      • In a spray bottle (I get mine at the dollar store!) mix 8 ounces of ACV with 16 ounces of water. Add essential oils to boost the cleaning and disinfectant power!
        •  Lemon oil for grease and grime
        • Tea Tree or Oregano for extra powerful disinfectant (perfect for bathrooms)
        • Lavender for a nice smell
  • Indigestion and Sour Stomach, Bloat and Constipation
    • ACV is fermented and has healthy probiotics. These can help regulate gut health and lead to less bloating and sour stomach. It also contains pectin which calms intestinal spasm and can relieve indigestion or diarrhea.
      • When an upset stomach hits you, mix 1/2 ounce ACV with 8 ounces of water and drink 1-2 times per day.
  • All Natural Deodorant
    • Store bought deodorants are filled with nasty and toxic chemicals that are a serious health concern, and ACV gives you an all natural deodorant. Sweating is good and consists of toxins leaving your body, but the smell that comes with it can be not so pleasant. No one wants BO and no one wants to smell it!!!! So, Combine ACV with essential oils for a smelly bacteria killing powerhouse that is healthy!
    • In a small bottle mix 4 ounces of ACV (don’t dilute) with tea tree oil or oregano essential oil. Both have strong disinfectant properties in them.
    • This combination will kill the bad smelly bacteria while leaving your arm pits free to sweat away…safely!
