My Fitness Pal: How to Use It and Why I Love It!

I use Fitness Pal and on Crockpot Empire you can find out how to use it to your advantage!

Did you know one of the keys to weight management and weight loss is monitoring what goes in your mouth??!! Not only does it help you know what is going in your body, it also helps you to recognize and learn portion control. You might be less likely to eat trail mix if you know it has 150 calories, and you only have 80 calories remaining for your day. A cucumber and dip or an apple might be a better option.

First, download the app on your phone or tablet. I like my phone, because I always have it with me and can add as I eat to make sure I never forget what I actually ate!

At the end of your day, it lets you know where you will be at the end of 5 weeks. This can be extremely motivating to keep on going to achieve your weight loss goals and maintenance.

YOU have to be very thorough with your entries for each meal or snack every day. If you have 2 eggs with 5 raspberries, and Ezekiel bread with 1/2 tsp of coconut oil spread on it…then that is exactly what you enter. My Fitness Pal has a huge catalog of food already in it, but if you make something from scratch you can add that in, too.

Once you use it for a week or so, you will see your most used foods popping up so that you don’t have to search each time. You can also do a “multi-add” for a meal. In my above breakfast example, instead of entering each item individually, I can enter them all at once. Another option is to save food items that you often eat together as a “meal.”  Then, you can quickly add the entire meal.

If you have a hard time drinking water, or forget how much you have drank, you can enter a cup each time you drink one. As the day goes on, you will know how much water you have had to ensure you get the recommended amount of 8 glasses a day.

It will also track your cardio or strength training. On this day, I took a 45 minute spin class. Simply, enter in your exercise for the day and for how long you did it. I also wear a heart rate monitor, and my fitness pals calorie burn count has been fairly consistent.

my fitness pal-healthy living-weight loss-food diary-kate swain-crockpot empireAnother great feature is the snap shot it gives you of your macros. It will tell you how your meals and day break down. You can get the percentages of carbs, fat and protein in each meal or your day.

my fitness pal-healthy living-weight loss-food diary-kate swain-crockpot empireOne final feature that I love is the community aspect of it. You have the option of keeping your profile private so that only you can see it, or setting it so that just a few people you have selected can see it, or even setting it to public so anyone can see what you have eaten. You can also look at other peoples “diaries” for inspiration or accountability. If you are on a journey with a friend or group of friends, y’all could all keep your “diaries” open to each other for encouragement and motivation.

Finally, on this day I had “extra” calories left over. I could stop here and not eat anymore, however, I chose to have some Greek yogurt after dinner with fresh strawberries in it. The nice thing is that you are in control. You have a snapshot of where you are calorie-wise in your day and can make better decisions about the foods you eat. I love this app and I hope you will try it, too. Best thing is: IT’S FREE!!!

my fitness pal-healthy living-weight loss-food diary-kate swain-crockpot empireA body is made in the kitchen, and only made stronger in the gym! My Fitness Pal is just another tool you have to reach and keep your health and fitness goals. Have you tried it? Have a great week ladies and gents…HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S Day!!
