A Tribute to Lake Bozman

I have thought about this post for several months, but I just wasn’t ready. It had to be the perfect tribute for Lake, Anna and their family and in order for that to happen I had to let my heart heal. It was broken and I had to mourn the loss of a special little boy that did not deserve to be taken from his mother, my dear friend, entirely too soon and incredibly unfairly to Acute Myeloid Leukemia on May 1st, 2015.Lake Bozman - Crockpot Empire Flashes of Hope - Lake Bozman The last time I wrote about Lake, he and his family were headed to Disney World with Bert’s Big Adventure. You can read about the excitement surrounding his trip here. I ended the post letting you know that I would update you on his trip, but heartbreakingly the trip never happened. The day before they were to leave, Lake got sick and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

I think that night we all knew, especially his mom Anna, that the end was near. No one ever wants to face or acknowledge that, especially as Christians, because we have hope and faith that God will restore and heal. However, there comes a time when you just have to begin to face reality, and the reality was that there was nothing left for the doctors to do. The pain and frustration that’s associated with that is unbearable, yet Anna was always so stoic. She and I had several hard conversations and I have always admired her courage, faith and strength. I can honestly say, I have grown so much from knowing her and walking with her on this incredibly painful, yet faith enriching journey.Ashley Blencoe - Crockpot EmpireLake got better and was able to go home and Bert Weiss from Q100 wanted to do something incredibly memorable for him, since he couldn’t go on the trip to Disney World. Lake has loved basketball his whole life and played every season, except the one when he received his transplant. He was such a strong and brave fighter that wouldn’t let Cancer get in the way of him being a kid no matter how much it tried. And sadly it tried SO hard, but Lake ALWAYS fought.

Bert got in touch with the Atlanta Hawks and they created the most memorable experience that would make a lasting imprint on Lake and his family. They were picked up in a limo and taken to Philips Arena, where Lake signed a one-day contract and officially became a player of the Atlanta Hawks for a day. A news conference was held announcing Bozman as the newest team member where Coach Budenholder said, “We look for very very special people to add to our team that are brave and strong and will do anything for anybody at any time.” If you knew Lake, Coach Bud described him to at “T.” He was brave, strong, and the most unselfish little boy that cared more about others than himself.

Lake got his very own jersey, personally met his teammates, got to sit courtside and was named the team’s MVP. His mom Anna said, “He’s been battling for three years and I just really wanted to see his dream come true.” And his dream did come true, and less than a month later, he received his wings and flew to Heaven and received the greatest reward one could ever receive.

Anna wrote on Lake’s Facebook prayer page, “Lake is healed and cancer free once again. He passed early this morning suddenly but peacefully. I feel peace knowing he is in the arms of Jesus and no longer fighting. I know he was met with some very special Angels sent special for him. Fly high sweet boy!!!!”

Life goes on here on earth, but never will a mother forget her child, or a friend forget the journey I have shared and experienced alongside Anna. My family and close friends saw how badly losing Lake wrecked me and my heart was hurting so badly. I could barely talk or catch my breath at times I was sobbing so hard. You would have thought it was my own child. I have done much reflection over the past few months and when you are so close to the world of Pediatric Cancer it almost feels as such. As cancer moms, we are all in this fight together.Anna Bozman - Kim Bishop - Stone Mountain - Crockpot RmpireIt is unfair, unjust and we deserve to give our children so much more than what they get from the government in funding to find a cure. I will continue to fight in honor of Lake, his best friend Mary Elizabeth Paris, who are running carefree, laughing and living in the Kingdom protecting those they love here on earth, along with all of the other precious children having to face this deadly disease, including my own son.Ashley Blencoe - Lake Bozman - Crockpot EmpireimageNobody knows why Lake was only here on earth for eight short years, three weeks shy of his ninth birthday, but what I do know is that his beautiful life was meant for great purpose. He continues to touch the hearts of thousands of strangers and helping raise much needed funds for pediatric cancer even from Heaven. At the young age of five, he was diagnosed and spent the last three years of his life in and out of the hospital teaching us all how to love Jesus, pray, be courageous and be kind even in the midst of an incredibly difficult struggle.Cure Childhood Cancer - Transplant - AML

After Lake passed, Anna married her husband Travis, who was so patient and loving during the three years that Anna took care of Lake and her family, basically living at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. They put the wedding on hold to focus on Lake. And on one of the most special day’s of Anna’s life, she was missing one of the biggest pieces of her. Yet, we all know he was there in spirit and he showed her in so many special ways that she magically and gracefully felt.Lake Bozman - Angel - Wedding - Crockpot EmpireWe love you Lake and will continue to miss your silly personality, funny antics and your sweet spirit. My prayer is that you continue to watch over your mommy, Travis, Trindon, Cambree and your friend Knoxie. He talks about you all of the time and we will n e v e r stop. Fly high sweet boy!

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

What a heart-felt tribute. I knew about Lake as I followed along with Mary Elizabeth’s battle. These children were and still are such great examples of how to have faith and love God. I don’t know these children personally, but I’ve prayed for both children and their families. God uses broken people and He’s certainly used them to inspire others.

Thank you very much, Susan. Yes, they both have certainly impacted so many lives and will continue to do so as precious angels. Thank you for your prayers and support of childhood cancer awareness!
